Castle Combe 3rd Sept 2003 This event was the last in the 2003 series and notable for the presence of National Cross country running champion Rob Walley. Normally good first run would be in the region of 10'50" to 11'00". Rob ran 10'12". he managed to take a slight detour too!. There have been slightly faster runs but not many. Rob Hayday did a 10'11" in 1997 and another cross country runner, Spencer Duvall had a10'02" in 2000. Richard |Jones and Duncan McKerracher ran 10'07"'s in 1999. The real running took place after the bike though. Rob had a 1 min 35 sec deficit to Richard Hobson. No problem a 9'12" saw to that. I have racked all the archive results and that is a good 35 secs plus faster than anyone has ever run the 2nd run stage. Well done Rob. Meanwhile back in the land of Hogweed Simon Spedding 11'26"/23'59"/11'17" = 46'42" 9th place and 3rd V40 Paul Chappell 12'24"/24'01"/12'26" = 48'52" 23rd place and 8th V40 George Ramelkamp from Terry's cycles (who forgot to bring his trainers and borrowed a pair!) 49'08" for 28th place and 11th V40 Chris Martin 51'07" in his first C/Combe 44th Ron White (wearing a pair of trainers that i convinced are made out of paper!!) 51'49" 51st Philippa Crocker 66'10" 128th Simon Spedding also picked up the 1st V40 prize for the series . In part due to the fact that the real top 40 year old Rob Pears won the series outright. well done other Rob.
Castle Combe Rowathlon 17th Aug 2003 17th August saw 3 Hogweeds try their hand at a Rowathlon. The event was held at Castle Combe race circuit and involved a static row of 3000m a bike ride of 21km and a run of 3km. The race was won by Hywel Davies who is well known in the race circuit for exploits in winning the notorious Tough guy event on several occasions. Paul Chappell was first Hogweed home (to survive). Paul had a eleven second lead over Chris Martin after the row but this was extended to 2 minutes by the end of the bike. Adrian Howell was a further minute behind after the bike. Paul was able to extend his lead to another one minute after the run and Chris took a minute from Adrian. Paul eventually finished in 5925 for 8th vet 40 and 30th overall. Chris came home in 53rd and Adrian 85th. Full results at http://www.rowingtriathlon.co.uk/ Locals Locals (Hogweeds in italics) at the Castle Combe Rowathlon (300m row, 21km bike 3km run)

Castle Combe June 2003 Windy this time around, what a surprise. Full results are here on the Bath site. June was a similar story to May with Philip Marland and Rob Rears, both V40's crushing the opposition on the bike and leaving Martin Rogers a lonely athlete in third place. A well supported Paul Slayermaker picked of a number of athletes to run into fourth place. The Cox family from Kingswood picked up two more awards with Yvonne taking 1sr F V40 and son Ryan getting an excellent 3rd junior. Ashlie Spedding competed in her first ever CC and as by far the youngest in the race did an excellent 1-09. Castle Combe Run 2 mile-Bike 10 mile- run 2 mile duathlon May 2003 With the weather fine and the wind blowing (It's only ever calm 1 event in 12) it was time to kick off the 2003 CC series. With over 140 entrants on the start line it certainly promises much for the summer. Come on Amphibs order up some more muesli ! Rob Pears one of the top local athletes was spotted trying to suss out the opposition. No Stuart Curtis so that was good news but with Duncan "I don't train much" Toon and martin Rogers looking good at the springfield Triathlon two days before it wouldn't be an easy run or ride. And with a few mysterious Army guys who knows? Off onto the first run the pace was manic as ever and most of the field coughed their lungs up with 500m. Within 1/2 mile the pace settles down and the leaders head off into the distance. Lee Perry (Adwick), Philip Marland (army), David Stevens (Bath), Rob Pears (Bath), Martin Rogers, Graeme "I've had my hair cut" Davis (Stroud AC), Adrian Mayhew (Snugg), Duncan Toon (Total Fatness) all streamed into transition with Lee Perry heading out just ahead of Daniel Stevens and Graeme Davis. As the bikers settled down Rob Pears caught and passed most of the field but battled it out with Philip Marland at the front. these two recoding the fastest bike splits of the day. Meanwhile behind the minor places were being contest by a rather larger group may of which would have succumbed to the draftbusters if there were any. For the defence of those riding there was not a lot of scope to move around with 140 bikers whizzing around a 2 mile circuit and there was very little blatant drafting as all tried to ride away from their nearest rival. Going particularly well were the ever improving Mark Keyford (Bath), Gerry (50 and proud of it) McGarr and Matt Chandler of Bath Uni After T2 Rob pears and Philip Marland were separated by just 3 seconds. Philip eventually ran 24 seconds faster to secure not only first spot but 1st V40 to. His time was also the fastest recoded by a V40 since the course changes made in 2000. Rob was equally impressive with 2nd V40 and 2nd overall. Graeme Davis ran his way into 3rd place to continue his fine form from last year. Duncan Toon was going well but had a 2min penalty for helmet violation and although finishing well up was reduced to 16th overall. First junior was Daniel Stevens of Bath in 11th position in a time of 47'56", second junior was Ryan Cox in 49th place in 52'47" just 3 minutes behind his Dad and two minutes ahead of his Mum, Sporty family! Gerry McGarr dominated the V50 race coming in 17th overall in 48'24" 3 minutes ahead of Adrian Lockstone of Cheltenham. In the ladies race Erica Fogg (Primera) came home in 51'31" finishing over 3 minutes ahead of 2nd female and first FV40 Yvonne Cox (Bitton) who was just ahead of Dani Preedy (Bristol Uni) in 55'22". The Hogweed Trotters at the event came in:- 13th Simon Spedding (3rd V40) 48'11", 21st Paul Chappell (4th V40) 49'19", 24th Stuart Salmon 49'47", 51st Daryl Spicer 53'08" in his first ever duathlon riding a mountain bike , 96th Mandy Spedding (6th F) 57'50", 139th Philippa Crocker 71'27" also racing was Jon Wheeler of Sodbury Cycle Sport 56'11" in 78th place.
Castle Combe July 2002 The 3rd July 2002 saw the third of the summer series of run/bike/run duathlons at Castle Combe race circuit organised by Bath amphibians Triathlon club. The only difference being that with this being the middle of summer (hard to believe with all this wet weather isnt? Julys event would be run/bike/run/bike/run each run being 2 miles and the bike sections 10 miles each. The weather was kind (always windy at Castle Combe though) and first local athlete home and 7th overall was Simon Spedding of Sodbury Cycle Sport and Hogweed Trotters in 1 hour 2448 taking the first over 40 prize yet again. Simon Hill from Bitton Road Runners who was sworn to catch Simon S at one of these events was 5 minutes behind in 1-2948 finishing 21st and getting stronger with each event. George Ramelkamp known to the local cyclist for his workshop expertise at Terrys Cycles in Yate was 27th in 1-3043 just ahead of the evergreen (that's polite for "Old") Rich James of Kingswood Tri . Over the next few minutes there was a stream of Kingswood
and other local athletes coming home including Kingswood Triathlon Clubs Eric
Downey on what must have been a pair of stiff and heavy
legs having run a marathon just three days previously. Mandy Spedding of
Hogweed Trotters took the third prize for ladys event in a time of
1-4328.
