The end of May was a sad time with
Triathlon losing one it's great local characters. Simon Harwood
"Geordie" (51) sadly passed away while on a cycling tour with his
partner Fay. I first met Simon playing cricket for NALGO back in late 80's
and early 90s. This is while working for Bath City Council. I remember Simon
saying he was off to do a triathlon and thinking "wow he must be a
really fit bloke". A the time I was committed to football and cricket.
Not long after I was in the triathlon fold and Simon was correcting my
novice swim stroke at the Sport centre in Bath and we did the lunch time
runs together. Every so often when I swim I remember his advice about
crossing my arms over "the centre-line". Something I quickly
corrected and Simon never did. Thank you Simon. A
lovely bloke who will be sadly missed but fondly remembered. The
picture below comes from the Bath AC website.

 | The race season is now with us and the
first local race was the Castle Combe Duathlon. Run over the usual 2mile 10
mile 2 mile run-bike-run format it is just a bit cooler and windier
than the Bath Amphibians series which kicks of in May. Hogweeds taking part
were Phillipa Crocker, Claire Seward, Chris Martin, Paul Chappell and Simon
Spedding. for the results go to

 | News taken from the Triathletes UK
website:-
The BTA's rulebook (yes, there is one...)
is pretty much harmonised with the ITU rules and so their change to the
drafting zone will be implemented here this season. What does this mean?
Basically this:
Short course (standard distance
and below): The draft zone is a rectangle measuring seven (7)
metres long by three (3) metres wide which surrounds every cycle on the
cycle course. The front edge of the front wheel defines the centre of the
leading three (3) metre edge of the rectangle. This is a change from last
year where the zone was five (5) metres by two (2) metres measure off the back
wheel. The zone is, therefore, bigger so you need to leave more room between
bikes. The time to pass, however, remains at 15 seconds.
Long course/Middle distance:
No change, still ten 10 metres by three (3) and 30 seconds to pass.
We are still waiting to see if the results
of the BTA's "Drafting Survey" result in any other rule changes in
respect of penalties. We would certainly like to see graded time penalties
related to the event distance and stiffer penalties overall but the concern
we have is that there simply aren't enough officials to go around --
especially those out there on the course as motorcycle referees. Static
marshalling works on some courses but isn't always a solution -- there's
nothing to beat a set of eyes out there on the road. And, of course, given
the moves afoot to drive everything back down to the regions under the
proposed restructuring of the BTA there are going to be questions as to how
national policies get implemented and policed. |

400m swim 20km bike and 5km run. With 3 Hogweeds at Calne Tim Lund was
racing for the Hogweeds at Gloucester Triathlon 400m swim of
7:42 followed by a bike split of 31:56 and finally a run split of
24:07 (9th fastest of the day) giving a total of 1:03:45 for an overall
position of 35th |
 |
Calne
Triathlon 400m swim 20k bike 5k run. A
tough out and back bike ride from St Mary's School Calne, along the A4 to
Chippenham, followed by a (short) flat 5k. Simon and Ron both had bike
problems, Simon's back wheel came loose resulting in a short stop half way
up a hill. Ron's chain came off resulting in a short stop half way down a
hill. Ron also rode over there from Wotton! Both managed 2nd in their age
categories though. Anthony raced well although he was disappointed, but
considering he has been laid low with flow for three of the last 5 weeks and
has not visited a swimming pool lately it is a good base to start the season
off with. Alos racing was former Hogweed Trotter Sarah Holton. Sarah now
lives near Taunton and races for Trull Troggers!!! She finished in 1 hr 14
and was 9th lady home. Hubbie Pete, who ran 2 hrs 52 at London marathon is
dedicated to ultra-marathons this year, so if your mad as well and race
these silly events, look out for him. The full results for Calne are all on www.raceevents.co.uk. |

Springfield Triathlon results
here. Well done to Tim Lund who was 51st in 1-10'39" for the 400m
swim, 22km bike and 5k run. Claire Seward knocked a massive 7 minutes off
her time for last year's event with 1 hr 23'40". Most impressively she
reduced her swim time from 10'10" to 7'23". Claries time of 1 hour
23'40" was good enough for 3rd female vet 40 too.. Clash of the Robbins
family saw Phil Robbins take the honours by one second over daughter Helen.
1 hour 21'12" and 13" respectively. Helen was 2nd junior female
home. |
 |
On the same day as Springfield was
Calne Triathlon where Ron White managed the 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run
in 1-13'45" for 10th place overall. |

For the 2005 race season TRI UK is able to
offer triathletes wetsuit hire for just £25 FOR THE WHOLE SEASON!! We
thought this might be something your club members would be interested in due
to the increase in open water triathlons over the past few seasons. We are
hoping that this low all-season hire fee will encourage more triathletes to
enter open water events - usually the cost of hiring/buying a wetsuit can be
a big deciding factor in entering such races.
Wetsuits can be hired easily over the phone -
we will need your chest, height and weight measurements. Or club members can
come down and be personally fitted into a hire suit and can even try it in
our in-store Endless Pool before they decide which size to hire!
TRI UK will also be introducing a Club
Loyalty Card for the 2005 season. This scheme will enable your club members
to receive regular discounts on their TRI UK purchases. We will forward you
further details of this scheme when it is launched.
We would most appreciate it if you could
forward this information to your club members via your club newsletter or
club notice board. If either yourself or your club members have any queries
regarding any of the above please contact us via sales@triuk.com
or by calling 07000 874854 (01935 414142/01935 433533).
We wish your club every success for the 2005
season!
